The latest version of Numbers is 4.1
As far as I know, Numbers 4.1 is the only version available in the App Store.
To download and run Numbers 4.1 you must first download and install MacOS Sierra 10.12.x
If your iMac running OS X 10.11.6 is not capable of running MacOS Sierra 10.12.x, you can not download Numbers 4.1
It is a pity that App Store does not first check your System and machine and tell you this, but leaves you with a spinning wheel with no advice.
